Mr. Number is the world’s first crowd-sourced caller ID service.
Mr. Number began as a service of Skydeck, a company that’s been developing app for cell phones since 2008. At Skydeck we discovered that our users hated getting calls and texts from numbers that they didn’t recognize. Sometimes those calls were from old friends or important customers. But sometimes they were from telemarketers, bill collectors, or people they never wanted to speak to again.
First we tried looking up numbers for our users in the Yellow Pages and White Pages. But that usually didn’t work. When we looked a little closer, we discovered that 80% of calls made to our users’ mobile phones came from other mobile phones. Those numbers aren’t in the Yellow Pages.
We guessed that if those numbers weren’t in your address book, they were probably in another user’s address book. So we asked users of our contact backup service a simple question: in return for free caller ID, would they let us look up results for other members in their address books?
Many said no, and continue to use our service just for contact backup. But many said yes, and this ‘crowd-sourced’ caller ID is now our most popular service. We’ve decided that it deserves its own name. So welcome to Mr. Number.
